Do your ears become overgrown if you don't wear earrings?

The parotid fistula is localized in the area of the auricle, representing a canal lined with epithelium. This disease often manifests itself at the birth of a child, but it can also be a consequence of complications of surgery or prolonged inflammation (including otitis media).

Congenital disease in infants is hereditary in a quarter of cases. It happens that a fistula is misdiagnosed, confused with another disease, and the patient goes to the doctor when an abscess develops.

The preauricular fistula is located on the tragus of the ligament and is often short in length. The end of the move is blind. The main cause of the disease: non-fusion of the tubercles with each other. But fistulas also have long tracts, involving the neck, nasopharynx and middle ear. The entrance opening of the parotid fistula does not exceed a millimeter, and under the skin the fistula canal itself (depending on the type) is about a centimeter.

Types of parotid fistulas

According to the generally accepted classification of Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Bobrov, professor of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, fistulas are divided into 4 types:

  1. First category. Upon visual inspection, only the traversal point or tissue depression above the tragus of the child’s ear is visible. It is impossible to probe such a fistula due to incomplete formation of the canal.
  2. The second category is characterized by a visible hole above the tragus of the ear. The channel can be in the form of a pipe or a cylinder, the stroke depth varies from 5 mm to 10 mm. As a rule, such channels do not retain secretions and rarely become inflamed (photo).
  3. The third category of ear fistulas. Its characteristics: the hole is located above the tragus, the passage has the shape of a bag, and the diameter of the passage is larger than the entry point, which is why secretions accumulate in it, and the fistula often becomes inflamed. The course of the fistula varies in length on average from 15 to 17 mm.
  4. The fourth category of fistulas is a branching canal more than 17 mm deep with branches. The entrance hole is localized above the tragus, the tract itself is stretched (photo).

Troubleshooting methods

If you have coarse hair growing on the surface of your ears, you should get rid of this problem. A wide variety of methods will be available to you. Each of them has the right to exist, but in order to choose the optimal one, you need to consider their features, advantages and disadvantages.

  • Hair trimming. If there is slight hair growth, the easiest way is to trim off any stray hairs. Scissors are usually used for this, but doing this yourself risks damaging your ear. It is better to buy a special trimmer for removing hair from the nose and ears. It is popular among men as it allows you to quickly and safely get rid of the problem. The disadvantage of this method is that the hair grows quickly, but it becomes stiff and causes discomfort.
  • Removal with tweezers. Pulling out hairs from the roots has a longer lasting effect. For several hairs, this method is quite suitable. But with abundant hair growth, the procedure will take too much time. In addition, it is worth considering that such removal is very painful, especially in the ear area. Over time, the hairs become thinner and less noticeable, but this can trigger the awakening of new follicles. Another disadvantage is the risk of infection, as the skin is injured.
  • Photoepilation. Using a special device, a light pulse is applied that destroys the hair. This procedure is only suitable for dark hair and requires several sessions.
  • Laser hair removal. Hypertrichosis can be eliminated forever by exposing the bulbs to a laser beam. There are diode and more efficient alexandrite lasers . The procedure requires several sessions, from 3 to 12. It costs a lot, but can completely solve the problem.
  • Drug treatment. Depending on the cause of hypertrichosis, hormonal medications can be used to restore balance and stop pathological hair growth. You need to be extremely careful with hormones. Oral contraceptives can affect the female body. The medicine is prescribed exclusively by a doctor and after a series of tests.

In some cases, hypertrichosis is eliminated through the use of several methods at once. This is necessary in order to influence the cause of its development and prevent the problem from occurring in the future.

Causes of the disease

There are many reasons for the occurrence of a fistula near the auricle. They are divided into two categories:

  • Congenital causes (caused by abnormal development of the fetus, difficult pregnancy and heredity);
  • Acquired causes (prolonged inflammation with suppuration of tissues near the ear, postoperative complications, infection, otitis media or chronic ear diseases).

The stronger the inflammation and purulent process, the larger and wider the fistula; in addition, microbes entering it provoke increased inflammation.

Removal methods

There are many ways to remove unwanted vegetation:

  1. The problem associated with unwanted hair affects not only men, but also most women. An electric razor will help well in this matter; it is equipped with special functions and attachments that easily remove hair on the fingers, ears and nose.
  2. A special trimmer will help you remove fuzz from your ears at home. This device does an excellent job of eliminating hair in the ears and other parts of the body effectively and painlessly.
  3. Thanks to scissors with a rounded tip, you can also cut off the fuzz safely.
  4. One of the popular procedures is waxing. To do this, you need to coat the auricle well with olive oil, then apply wax. The procedure lasts 10 minutes. After the wax has hardened well, unnecessary hairs are removed.
  5. Do not use tweezers or hair removal cream to remove hair from the ears. A person can get allergies and damage the ear itself.
  6. The methods listed above allow you to get rid of hair for a short period. To get rid of them forever, you need to use hair removal. Laser hair removal for removing unwanted hair is considered reliable and convenient. During electrolysis, a person experiences mild pain, but this procedure is also effective.

Symptoms

With a congenital disease, an ear fistula often does not manifest itself or cause any concern, and when a child is accidentally looked at, the fistula is noticed by parents or medical personnel examining the baby at an appointment. A small amount of white or transparent secretion comes out of the ear. Sometimes bacteria get into the fistula, the child complains of pain in the ear, the temperature rises, and nearby tissues fester. The child feels lethargic and overwhelmed.

If an ear fistula is caused by a complication after surgical manipulation, then its first symptoms are a lump or lump on the tissue where the operation was performed; pain; tissue swelling; redness. The patient's temperature rises, and pus may ooze from the wound.

If a child has chronic otitis and caries, then a bone tissue fistula often occurs, accompanied by nausea and vomiting, and sensations of tremors in this area (photo). The baby's skin turns pale, he becomes dizzy, and sudden hot flashes occur with sweating.

Why does hair grow from my ears? - causes of hairiness

You don't have to look like a gorilla. “A man may try to get rid of unwanted hair that he develops over time,” says Dr. Newkamer. - Most men will solve this issue by shaving. This is the easiest and simplest way." But maybe you want to take a different approach? Below is a list and description of ways to eliminate unwanted hair.

You can’t allow a real jungle to grow in your external auditory canal. Most of the hair appears on the pinna of your ear, at the entrance to the ear canal, and on the tragus, the small protrusion next to the ear canal. If you do not have sufficient manual dexterity, ask your hairdresser to tidy up your ears, nose and eyebrows.

If you can do the job yourself, invest in a good pair of small, curved-blade grooming scissors, Dr. Newkamer advises.

Do you know anything about this method of removing excess hair? This method can be used to remove hair from the chest, shoulders, back, arms, legs and even the face. Some men use wax only to remove beard hair, says Dr. Newkamer. To do this, you should contact a specialist.

But you can buy a set of hair removal products at the pharmacy in this way. You will need to warm up the wax (it shouldn't be too hot), apply it to the skin using a spatula, let it harden, and then remove it from the skin. There is no need to cower in fear in advance. If you want to use the services of a professional, then choose a special salon to remove hair from the entire body. In a beauty salon for men you will receive all the procedures that you can do yourself at home, but in a salon it will all be done faster.

Diagnosis of the disease

If symptoms appear, parents should visit the hospital, where an ENT specialist will examine the baby. The primary method for diagnosing a fistula: palpation of the parotid area by a doctor, during which the doctor presses on nearby tissues, examines the secretion from the fistula entrance, and probes the depth. After this, the doctor prescribes a series of measures to help understand how long the course is and whether it branches. For this purpose, pressor tests and fistulography are used.

An ear fistula does not always bother the baby; it can only manifest itself as a tubercle in the ear or the canal is blind and short, which does not prevent the baby from living a full life; in these cases, the fistula is simply monitored. If the resulting ear fistula becomes inflamed and festers, and the tissue nearby swells, then it is recommended to treat this pathology.

What to do if hair removal is accompanied by increased pain?

“Visit a dermatologist an hour before your waxing procedure. He will numb you with a local anesthetic, explains Dr. Seth L. Matarasso. “Then you are unlikely to feel any pain.”

If you opt for waxing but are also using anti-wrinkle creams such as tretinoin (Retin-A) or skin lotions containing glycolic acid, stop using them a few days before the procedure, says Dr. Matarasso. When using skin cleansers, two superficial layers of skin are removed, making it more sensitive.

After waxing, it will take about 6 weeks for hair to grow back, says Dr. Matarasso. You should wait until they grow to 5mm. Only after this can the procedure be repeated.

Treatment of the disease

This disease not only has an unpleasant aesthetic appearance, but also requires careful treatment and compliance with the doctor’s recommendations. If the fistulas are shallow and do not become inflamed, then therapy is not recommended for them.

Antibacterial therapy

When the inflammatory process begins, the fistulas are opened so that the pus comes out. To alleviate the patient's condition, treatment with antibacterial and antiseptic drugs is recommended. Levomekol and Chlorhexidine are recommended for lubricating inflamed fistulas. After the inflammatory process stops and pus stops flowing from the fistula. It closes itself until the next inflammation. If the fistulas are localized in the ear in such a way that it is impossible to get to them, then a course of antibacterial therapy is prescribed. It will relieve inflammation, and the fistulas themselves will disappear without additional intervention from the surgeon.

Excision by surgical methods

If inflammations containing pus recur constantly, then treatment is performed surgically. Preauricular fistulas are localized near the facial nerves, so medical manipulations there should be carried out with great caution (especially operations). Before prescribing an operation, the doctor prescribes a fistulography for the child to understand how deep the canal is and whether it branches.

Short fistulas are excised galvanocaustically or split. If the fistula is long, then it is cut out; if the operation is unsuccessful and if the capsule remains in the ear, the inflammatory process will begin again.

Fistula excision in adult children is carried out in a hospital under local anesthesia, and for younger children it is recommended to perform it under general anesthesia. The extent of the surgeon’s intervention in the body of a small patient depends on the stage of the disease and complications. In case of acute one-time inflammation, the skin is cut and the opened cavity is drained.

Why does hair appear in the nose, eyebrows and ears as we age?

Do you really have to put up with these uninvited shoots appearing here and there? “Some men are so hairy that they look like our distant ancestors who came down from the trees,” says Dr. Victor Newkamer.

“No one knows exactly why as we age, hair appears in the nasal passages, eyebrows become brush-like and stubble appears on the ears,” he says. “For now these are just established facts of life.” These additional bristly hairs typically begin to appear shortly after age 50 and become truly noticeable between ages 60 and 70, he explains. Whether they are destined to appear to you depends on what nature has endowed you with.

There are cases of excess hair growth starting at puberty and continuing this trend throughout life.

Although the appearance of new hair is not associated with the aging process itself, it can become quite annoying. Some men, due to the abundance of hair on their chest, shoulders and back, constantly feel discomfort due to the fact that they cannot afford to wear shorts or swim trunks. However, this does not mean that you are forever doomed to wear only closed clothes.

You can pull out excess hairs in the area of the bridge of the nose using tweezers. In this way, fused eyebrows are eliminated. Experts don't particularly recommend this method for plucking hair on other areas of the skin, particularly the nose, says Dr. Newkamer. Undoubtedly, for sensitive skin this is a painful procedure.

Disease Prevention

  • Note to parents: what should you do if your child puts a foreign object in their ear?

At the moment, science and medicine do not know preventive actions that prevent the disease in its congenital form. As for the acquired form of pathology, otolaryngologists advise treating ear diseases in a timely manner, without reaching a chronic stage, and quickly responding to the slightest complication after ear surgery.
