Herbs for bathing newborns

Our great-grandmothers began using herbs for bathing babies, who noted their calming and disinfecting effect. Indeed, by adding herbal infusions to the bath, you don’t have to worry about tap water harming your baby’s skin. When should you start bathing your baby in herbs, how often should you do it, what mixture should you choose and how to brew the herbal decoction correctly?

I usually start bathing a newborn in herbs after the umbilical wound has healed. Chamomile and chamomile are the most “gentle” herbs; they are suitable for the first bath even for two-week-old babies, so it is better to start with them. But if a newborn has any skin diseases, then the pediatrician should advise which grass to bathe the child in.

Bathing a newborn in the infusion of the series

Series

- one of the most popular herbs for bathing newborns. It contains manganese, which has antimicrobial properties. Baths with a decoction of the string are suitable for children who have diathesis, inflammation of the skin, and seborrhea. However, the herb is considered a “skin-drying” herb, so experienced pediatricians and dermatologists advise bathing babies in this infusion no more than once a week and using baby cream after bathing.

The normal concentration for the solution is 2-3 tbsp. per liter of boiling water. The resulting decoction is added to the bath to the optimum temperature of 36 degrees.

In addition, other herbs can be combined with the string:

  • Chain and chamomile, in a 1:1 ratio.
  • Sequence, chamomile and sage, in a ratio of 2:1:1.
  • String and mint, in a 1:1 ratio.

Such solutions relieve inflammation on the skin and calm the baby.

A few tips you shouldn't forget

  • You should not start bathing your baby immediately in a decoction of herbal tea. Start with one herb and let your baby get used to it.
  • When trying any herb for the first time, check with a drop of infusion to see if an allergic reaction will occur by placing a few drops on the child’s skin. If after half an hour there is no redness, you can safely bathe him.
  • Do not experiment with mixtures, use proven recipes and consult with your pediatrician.
  • The amount of weed per bath should not exceed 25 grams, otherwise an allergic reaction may occur.
  • Brew the infusion an hour and a half before swimming.
  • Start bathing your newborn in herbal baths from 5 minutes, increasing the time to 15 minutes. And do this 2-3 times a week, not more often, so as not to dry out the skin.
  • After bathing in the herbs, it is not necessary to rinse your baby with clean water - the infusion will have its healing effect longer.

We hope that bathing in herbs will not only bring pleasure to you and your baby, but will also have a beneficial effect on the baby’s health!

Bath with motherwort

To strengthen the nervous system and reduce pain from colic, bathing with medicinal herbs is used. There are several recommendations:

  1. Before use, be sure to rule out an allergic reaction. It is necessary to apply a little decoction to the skin of the inner side of the elbow and wait a few hours. If there is no redness, itching, or rashes, you can proceed to bathing;
  2. To prepare the infusion, you will need 3-4 tbsp. l. dry grass (6-7 filter bags). The raw materials are poured into 0.5 liters of boiling water, left for about 40 minutes and added to the bath;
  3. You can brew motherwort together with other herbs after an allergy test for each of them separately. Bearberry, St. John's wort, hop cones and nettle are suitable;
  4. It is better to bathe with the broth before bedtime. Essential oils, when inhaled, affect the baby's receptors, help calm and promote relaxation;
  5. The duration of the procedure should be no more than 10-20 minutes. Afterwards you can have a relaxing massage.

A bath with motherwort is the safest way to normalize the functioning of the nervous system in children under one year old.

How to properly brew herbs for bathing?

The general rule for preparing herbal infusion is: you need to put about 2-4 tablespoons of the dry mixture per 0.5 boiling water.

You need to infuse the herbs for at least 20-40 minutes.

The finished, cooled infusion can be placed in the refrigerator and stored there for about a week.

When bathing a child, part of the infusion is added to the bath, and the other part of the infusion is left to rinse the child after bathing.

A collection of herbs for bathing newborns is also brewed. Specifics for brewing a particular herb are contained in the instructions.

Your pediatrician will also advise you on individual proportions. To save time, you can buy ready-made herbal extracts for bathing your baby.

Such extracts can be immediately added to the bathtub. One for 10 liters of water .

What grass to bathe in

The baby can be bathed using a collection of various medicinal herbs. To check the reaction, bathe your baby in only one herb for the first time for no longer than five minutes.

If the child turns red, cries, or has difficulty breathing, you must stop bathing. Perhaps an allergic reaction has begun. Before bathing in the new herb, it is recommended to drop its infusion on the baby’s forearm. If redness appears, it means that the child is allergic to this grass; it is better not to swim in it.

The very first herbs for bathing children are chamomile and string. They relieve inflammation, soothe and disinfect the umbilical wound and skin. Brew the mixture by pouring one glass of dry pharmaceutical herb per liter of boiling water.

This can be done in the morning, after breakfast. The herb will infuse until evening; it will need to be strained and added to the bathtub (the concentration is designed for a large bathtub).

To make the baby calmer, he is bathed in lavender, valerian, and motherwort. It is not recommended to mix more than four types of herbs at the same time. To avoid addiction, the herbs should be alternated.

A collection with thyme is useful. It relieves the child from restless sleep. Used in the treatment of rickets.

Lavender helps with frequent colds, boosting immunity and relieving inflammation.

It normalizes sleep in children, reduces irritability, and softens flaky skin.

For prickly heat, you can try baths with a decoction of bay leaves. It is brewed in an amount of 10 grams per liter of water and diluted in 10 liters of water. Bathing in a decoction of oak bark and calendula also helps to cope with skin problems.

To prepare a soothing mixture, mix motherwort, valerian root, thyme, and oregano in equal proportions. A glass of herbal mixture is poured with a liter of boiling water and left for several hours. This infusion is enough for a large bath with a volume of more than 100 liters. Before pouring into the bath, it must be filtered.

Bathing children in a bath with the addition of pine extract (spruce or pine) relieves spasms, soothes, and improves blood circulation.

Children should not be bathed in herbs that have potent, poisonous or toxic effects. These include:

  • citrus;
  • sagebrush;
  • tansy;
  • celandine;
  • thuja;
  • eyebright;
  • broom;
  • Adonis.

These preparations are dangerous due to their unpredictable effect on the baby’s body, possible ingestion of water and subsequent poisoning.
